Helen Miller

Hired by the Idaho State Library Board in 1962, Helen Miller (far right) served as state librarian for 18 years, the longest tenure of anyone in the position to date. Under her direction, the state library increased support of library services to local communities, expanded from a small area in the basement of the State Historical Museum to its own building at Third and State Streets, supported scholarships for the training of professional librarians, and moved library systems into the era of information technology, from card catalogs to computers. In the winter of 1962, Miller drove to Idaho from the East in the Volkswagen Beetle that was her trademark car. The basic model had no radio or heater, so she hung a transistor radio from the rearview mirror, wore the warmest coat and snow boots that she could find, and made the trip. She was stopped once by a snowstorm in Wyoming, but arrived in time to start her new job on January 15, 1962. (Courtesy of the Idaho Commission on Libraries.)
